Cohere API Keys

To utilize the Generative AI features in Oracle Database, you'll need to connect to a Large Language Model (LLM) through an API. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the steps to obtain API keys from Cohere and OpenAI, two of the primary LLMs currently supported by Oracle Database. As Oracle expands its AI capabilities, additional LLMs may become available.

Generating a Cohere API Key

To begin, visit the Cohere API Dashboard. You can sign in using your Google or GitHub account, or create a new account if you don’t already have one. To create an account, click the "Sign-up" link at the bottom right of the page. You’ll need to provide your email address and select a secure password. After completing these steps, check your email inbox for a confirmation message from Cohere. Click the link in the email to verify your account and complete the sign-up process.

When you sign-up to Cohere, you are initially creating a Trial (Free) account. For now, this will be enough for playing with Select AI. There are some restrictions but these might change over time so make sure to check this out.

Once you’ve logged into your Cohere Dashboard, you’ll be able to locate and access your API key. This key is essential for setting up access to the LLM from your remote environment, whether it’s an application, database, or other systems. The Trial API Key is rate-limited, making it suitable for testing and evaluation purposes. If you require higher limits or additional features, you may want to consider upgrading your account to a paid plan.
